Autumn with its mild temperatures and blaze of golden colours is the perfect time of year to explore the Gasterntal valley. This high-alpine valley is the starting point for lots of hiking tours, for instance to the Gasterespitz and Lötschen Pass. Less elevated, but no less spectacular is the approx. three-hour hike from the Berghotel Waldhaus to Selden, which follows the Kander and takes you along mountain pastures and cosy resting places.

Once summer is over, the cows are brought down from their grazing pastures. It’s also the time of year when this alpine hut (or cowshed, to be more precise) run by the Aellig family up on the Engstligenalp is turned into a raclette hut. With its snug atmosphere and tasty raclettes the dairy hut is the perfect spot to while away a few hours. Foodies, hikers and golfers alike all enjoy ending the day here with a generous helping of cheese and a decent drop of wine.
